Title: Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith by Rob Bell
Recommended By: Not recommended but I always take interest in what is considered to be popular among the up and comings.
Summary: This book is rather broad in scope but basically Rob begins by arguing that the Christian faith is something to be repainted and in a sense redefined (made culturally relevant) by each generation so that it speaks to that generation. Then he lays out his painting of the Christian gospel among other things.
Reflection: I didn’t like the book. There were some inconsistencies and some doctrinal positions that seem dangerous to me–his doctrine of Scripture is inconsistent with infallibility and inerrancy as I understand him. He does take a fuller view of the gospel–one that appears to be almost post-millenial–than most mainstream evangelicalism which is a step in the right direction but it is without a consistent footing theologically.
Read Again?: I had to force myself to finish it the first time so I doubt it.
Recommended To: No one, the problem is there are pieces of truth and good thought in what he writes but they are mixed with problems and errors. There is nothing of benefit here that I haven’t already read somewhere else of a better quality and greater value without the trouble of sifting through the weeds. So why waste our time here?
Price: If you want it that bad I suggest go find it yourself and not telling me that you did.
